atrodo
Seeming with Atrodyti
Atrodyti (atrodo, atrodė) means to seem or to look: Tu gerai atrodai (You look good). On its own, atrodo means it seems: Atrodo, kad lis.
How It Works
1. The forms. atrodyti, atrodo, atrodė. Present: atrodau, atrodai, atrodo, atrodome, atrodote, atrodo.
2. How someone looks. Add an adjective in the nominative, agreeing with the subject: Ji atrodo laiminga (She looks happy), Tu atrodai pavargęs (You look tired, to a man), Tu atrodai pavargusi (to a woman). An adverb describes the overall look: Tu gerai atrodai (You look good). Use kaip to compare: Jis atrodo kaip tikras sportininkas (He looks like a real athlete).
3. It seems that. Atrodo, kad ... introduces a kad clause, with a comma before kad: Atrodo, kad lis (It looks like it will rain). Add a dative to say whose impression it is, as with patinka: Man atrodo, kad tu teisus (I think you are right).
4. As an inserted word. Atrodo can also be dropped into a sentence, set off with commas, to mean apparently: Jis, atrodo, pamiršo (He seems to have forgotten). Compare Jis atrodo pavargęs, where atrodo is the main verb and has no commas. For other inserted words, see įterpiniai.
