Dates
Lithuanian says September's twenty-fourth (day): rugsėjo dvidešimt ketvirtoji. The month is in the genitive, and the day is a feminine ordinal agreeing with diena.
How It Works
1. Month names in the genitive. sausio, vasario, kovo, balandžio, gegužės, birželio, liepos, rugpjūčio, rugsėjo, spalio, lapkričio, gruodžio. They are written with a lowercase letter, as explained in mažosios raidės.
2. The day is an ordinal. The day is a feminine ordinal number, because it agrees with diena (day), which can be left out. Dates usually take the long, definite form: penktoji, dvidešimt ketvirtoji. In a compound number, only the last word is an ordinal: dvidešimt ketvirtoji.
3. Naming a date. Use the nominative: Kokia šiandien data? Rugsėjo dvidešimt ketvirtoji. (What is the date today? The 24th of September.)
4. On a date. Use the accusative of time, with or without dieną: Gimiau gegužės penktą dieną or Gimiau gegužės penktąją (I was born on the fifth of May). No preposition is needed.
5. Writing dates. In the long format, the day is a number followed by d. and the month is a word: gegužės 5 d., read aloud as gegužės penktą dieną or penktoji diena, whichever case the sentence needs. With the year, write 2026 m. rugsėjo 24 d. The short format uses hyphens: 2026-09-24. Holidays are often written with the ordinal ending: Vasario 16-oji, Vasario 16-ąją. For how to say the year itself, see metai: 2026-aisiais.
