niekas / niekada + ne-

Negative Words with Ne-

Level 2

Niekas neatėjo. Nobody came. · Niekada ten nebuvau. I have never been there.

How It Works

The negative words.

  • niekas – nobody, nothing
  • niekur – nowhere
  • niekada (also niekad) – never
  • niekaip – in no way
  • joks, jokia – no, not any (before a noun)

With ne- in a full negative clause. The verb keeps its ne-, even with a negative word: Niekas neskambino. (Nobody called.) Niekur neinu. (I am not going anywhere.) Several negative words can join one verb: Niekas niekada nieko nesakė. (Nobody ever said anything.) These negative-concord words reinforce one negative meaning.

Nieko and jokio: the genitive. A negated verb puts its object in the genitive, see genitive after negation. So "nothing" as an object is nieko, and joks becomes jokio, jokios, jokių: Nieko nematau. (I see nothing.) Neturiu jokių klausimų. (I have no questions.) Other cases of niekas are niekam (to nobody) and niekuo (with nothing): Niekam nesakyk. (Don't tell anybody.)

Short answers. Without a verb, the negative word stands alone: Kas ten? – Niekas. (Who is there? – Nobody.) Kada? – Niekada. (When? – Never.)

Anyone or no one? For an open question asking whether someone exists or acted, use kas nors instead: Ar kas nors skambino? (Did anyone call?) To say "not a single one", add nė: Nė vienas neatėjo.

Examples (6)

  1. Niekas neatėjo.

    Nobody came.

    Word by Word: Nobody not-came.

  2. Niekada ten nebuvau.

    I have never been there.

Word by Word: Never there not-was-I.

  3. Nieko nematau.

    I can't see anything.

Nieko is genitive because the verb is negated.

  4. Šiandien niekur neisiu.

I am not going anywhere today.

  5. Neturiu jokių klausimų.

    I have no questions.

Joks agrees with klausimų in the genitive plural.

  6. Niekas niekada nieko nežino.

    Nobody ever knows anything.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping ne- from the verb.

    Niekas atėjo.
    Niekas neatėjo.

A negative word does not replace ne-. The verb must be negated too.

  • Using the nominative for "nothing" as an object.

    Aš nematau niekas.
    Aš nieko nematau.

The object of a negated verb is in the genitive, so "nothing" is nieko.

  • Keeping an accusative direct object after neturiu.

    Neturiu jokius klausimus.
    Neturiu jokių klausimų.

After a negated verb, both joks and its noun move to the genitive: jokių klausimų.
