nė
Not a Single One with Nė
Nė makes a negation stronger: not even one. The verb stays negated too: Nė vienas neatėjo (Not a single person came), nepasakė nė žodžio (did not say a word).
How It Works
1. Not a single one. The most common phrase is nė vienas / nė viena. It agrees like vienas, and the verb is negated:
- Nė vienas neatėjo. (Not a single person came.)
- Nemačiau nė vieno žmogaus. (I didn't see a single person.)
2. Set phrases. The phrases below often use the genitive:
- nė karto (not once): Nemačiau jo nė karto.
- nė žodžio (not a word): Jis nepasakė nė žodžio.
- nė cento (not a cent): Neturiu nė cento.
- nė kiek (not at all), nė trupučio (not a bit)
3. Before a verb. Nė can also stand before a negated verb and mean not even: Ji nė nepažiūrėjo į mane (She didn't even look at me).
4. Two negatives. As with niekas and niekada, Lithuanian keeps both negatives: nė and ne- on the verb. Nė vienas atėjo is wrong.
5. Nė or ne? One letter changes the meaning. Nė vienas means not a single one. Ne vienas means more than one, quite a few: Ne vienas turistas čia pasiklydo (More than one tourist has got lost here). In the same way, nė karto is not once, but ne kartą is more than once.
Examples (6)
- Nė vienas neatėjo.
Not a single person came.
Word by Word: Not-even one not-came.
Nė and the negated verb neatėjo work together.
- Nemačiau jo nė karto.
I haven't seen him even once.
- Jis nepasakė nė žodžio.
He didn't say a word.
Žodžio is genitive after the negated verb.
- Neturiu nė cento.
I don't have a single cent.
- Ji nė nepažiūrėjo į mane.
She didn't even look at me.
Nė before a negated verb means not even.
- Ne vienas turistas čia pasiklydo.
More than one tourist has got lost here.
With ne instead of nė, the meaning is more than one.
