juo labiau
All the More with Juo Labiau
Juo labiau means all the more or especially: Nenoriu eiti, juo labiau kad lyja. (I don't want to go, all the more because it is raining.)
How It Works
1. Juo labiau kad: a stronger reason
- Nenoriu eiti, juo labiau kad lyja. (I don't want to go, all the more because it is raining.)
- Reikia pailsėti, juo labiau kad rytoj ilga kelionė. (You need to rest, especially since there is a long journey tomorrow.)
The comma goes before juo labiau. Juo labiau kad works as one unit, so there is no comma before kad.
2. Juo labiau + a word: especially
The word after juo labiau keeps the case the sentence gives it: Visiems sunku, juo labiau vaikams. Here vaikams is dative, like visiems.
3. After a negative: let alone
Jis neturi laiko net pavalgyti, juo labiau sportuoti. (He doesn't even have time to eat, let alone exercise.) For a stronger literary way to say let alone, see Let Alone.
4. Where juo comes from
Juo is an old form meaning by that, so juo labiau is literally by that more. The same juo appears in Literary Juo ..., Juo ..., and a similar pattern is The More ..., the More .... Tuo labiau is also used with the same meaning.
