Literary Juo ..., Juo ...

Level 6

Juo toliau, juo sunkiau. means The further, the harder. It is a literary counterpart of kuo ..., tuo ....

How It Works

Two linked scales. The first part sets a changing amount or degree. The second says how another changes with it: Juo daugiau skaitau, juo daugiau suprantu.

Not always more of both. One thing can increase as another decreases: Juo ilgiau laukėme, juo mažiau vilties turėjome.

Short versions. Verbs may be left understood, as in Juo toliau, juo sunkiau. You may also encounter juo ..., tuo .... This entry teaches paired juo, without treating the other pattern as an error.

Common Mistakes

    Juo toliau, juo sunkiau.

With no masculine noun being described, use the state adverb sunkiau in this intended meaning.
