Attiecībā uz means with regard to or concerning. It names the topic of the sentence: Attiecībā uz šo jautājumu mums vēl nav lēmuma. (With regard to this question, we do not have a decision yet.)

How It Works

1. Naming a topic. Attiecībā uz points to what the statement concerns. It often opens the sentence:

  • Attiecībā uz šo jautājumu mums vēl nav lēmuma. (With regard to this question, we do not have a decision yet.)
  • Attiecībā uz jūsu vēstuli informējam, ka pieteikums ir saņemts. (With regard to your letter, we inform you that the application has been received.)

2. After a noun. It can also describe a noun, much like English on or for: Kādas ir prasības attiecībā uz valodas zināšanām? (What are the requirements for language skills?)

3. The case after it. Here uz takes the accusative in the singular, as in uz Rīgu (to Riga), and, like almost every preposition, the dative in the plural (see plural nouns after prepositions):

  • singular: attiecībā uz šo jautājumu, uz jūsu vēstuli
  • plural: attiecībā uz cenām, uz mājdzīvniekiem

4. Not attiecībā pret. Attiecībā pret means compared with or directed towards: eiro kurss attiecībā pret dolāru (the euro rate against the dollar). To name the topic of a statement, use attiecībā uz.

Plain style. In everyday speech, par does the same job: Ko tu domā par cenām? (What do you think about the prices?) See par + accusative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the accusative plural.

    Noteikumi attiecībā uz mājdzīvniekus ir mainījušies.
    Noteikumi attiecībā uz mājdzīvniekiem ir mainījušies.

    In the plural, uz takes the dative: mājdzīvniekiem, not mājdzīvniekus.

  • Putting the noun in the genitive.

    Attiecībā uz šā jautājuma mums vēl nav lēmuma.
    Attiecībā uz šo jautājumu mums vēl nav lēmuma.

    In attiecībā uz, uz takes the accusative in the singular, as in uz Rīgu: šo jautājumu. The genitive after uz, as in uz galda (on the table), is only for place.
