saskaņā ar
In Accordance with
Saskaņā ar means in accordance with or according to. Viss notika saskaņā ar plānu. (Everything went according to plan.) It is common in laws, rules, reports and news.
How It Works
1. Following a rule or plan. In formal texts, saskaņā ar names the law, rule or plan behind something:
- Saskaņā ar likumu veikalam ir jāizsniedz čeks. (According to the law, the shop must issue a receipt.)
- Viss notika saskaņā ar plānu. (Everything went according to plan.)
2. Citing a source. It also names where information comes from: Saskaņā ar laika prognozi rīt līs. (According to the weather forecast, it will rain tomorrow.)
3. In harmony with. Outside formal writing, it keeps the meaning of its noun saskaņa (harmony): Viņi cenšas dzīvot saskaņā ar dabu. (They try to live in harmony with nature.)
4. The case after it. Ar takes the accusative in the singular and, like almost every preposition, the dative in the plural (see plural nouns after prepositions):
- singular: saskaņā ar likumu, ar plānu, ar prognozi
- plural: saskaņā ar noteikumiem, ar datiem
Plainer choices. In everyday speech, people often say pēc plāna (according to plan) or kā teikts likumā (as the law says). The formal atbilstoši with the dative (atbilstoši likumam) is another option.
