-nieks / -niece
People from a Place or Trade
-nieks (a man) and -niece (a woman) make words for people: rīdzinieks (a man from Riga), dārznieks (gardener), zvejnieks (fisherman).
How It Works
1. People from a place.
- Rīga: rīdzinieks, rīdziniece
- Liepāja: liepājnieks, liepājniece
- Cēsis: cēsinieks, cēsiniece
- lauki (the countryside): laucinieks, lauciniece
Each town has its own fixed form, and some use a different suffix, so check a dictionary. Nationalities use -ietis and -iete: latvietis.
2. Occupations and roles.
- dārzs (garden): dārznieks (gardener)
- zveja (fishing): zvejnieks (fisherman)
- darbs (work): darbinieks (employee)
- pasts (post): pastnieks (postman)
- saime (household): saimnieks (owner, host)
3. The -i- and the sound change. In -inieks, a g or k before the i changes, as in consonant alternation: Rīg-a becomes rīdz-inieks, and lauk-i becomes lauc-inieks.
4. Declension. -nieks declines like first-declension nouns. -niece declines like fifth-declension nouns, and its genitive plural is -nieču: rīdzinieču.
5. Small letters. Unlike English, these words are not capitalized: Viņš ir rīdzinieks. (He is from Riga.) See capital letters.
