Past of Second-Conjugation Verbs
Drop the -t of the infinitive and add -ju, -ji, -ja, -jām, -jāt, -ja: runāt → runāju (I spoke), dzīvot → dzīvoja (lived). Every verb in this group does it the same way.
How It Works
1. The pattern. runāt (to speak): es runāju, tu runāji, viņš/viņa runāja, mēs runājām, jūs runājāt, viņi/viņas runāja.
2. More verbs.
- strādāt (to work) → strādāju, strādāja
- spēlēt (to play) → spēlēju, spēlēja
- dzīvot (to live) → dzīvoju, dzīvoja
- pusdienot (to have lunch) → pusdienoju, pusdienoja
3. Present and past side by side.
- es: runāju / runāju (the same)
- tu: runā / runāji
- viņš, viņa, viņi, viņas: runā / runāja
- mēs: runājam / runājām
- jūs: runājat / runājāt
In the mēs and jūs forms, only the long ā in the ending marks the past, so write it and say it clearly. For es, a time word such as vakar (yesterday) shows the tense.
4. One pattern for two groups. Third-conjugation verbs build the past in exactly the same way from the infinitive (lasīt → lasīju), so this pattern gives you most past forms (see past of third-conjugation verbs).

Common Mistakes

Using the present form after a past time word.
