iekš + Genitive

Old-Fashioned Iekš

Level 6

Older texts use the preposition iekš with the genitive for in: iekš mājas, iekš Rīgas. Today the locative does this job alone: mājā, Rīgā.

How It Works

1. The old pattern. Iekš takes the genitive: iekš mājas (in the house), iekš Rīgas (in Riga). It could mean both where something is and where it goes.

2. The modern equivalents.

  • The locative, with no preposition: mājā (in the house), Rīgā (in Riga).
  • iekšpusē + genitive, when you stress the inside: mājas iekšpusē (inside the house).
  • The adverb iekšā when there is no noun: Nāc iekšā! (Come in!)

3. Why it disappeared. Iekš was common in older written Latvian. Language authorities of the 1930s already rejected phrases like lieta pastāv iekš tam (the matter consists in this). In a similar way, careful modern Latvian replaces priekš in the sense for someone with a plain case, the dative.

4. Today. You may see iekš in jokes, slang or careless online writing. Standard Latvian does not use it.

Examples (5)

  1. Viņš dzīvoja iekš Rīgas.

    He lived in Riga.

Word by Word: He lived in of-Riga.

Old style. Modern: Viņš dzīvoja Rīgā.

  2. Iekš mājas bija tumšs.

It was dark in the house.

Word by Word: In of-house was dark.

Old style. Modern: Mājā bija tumšs.

  3. Mājā bija tumšs.

It was dark in the house.

Word by Word: In-house was dark.

    The modern locative.

  4. Mājas iekšpusē bija silts.

It was warm inside the house.

Word by Word: Of-house inside-in was warm.

  5. Kaķis ir iekšā.

    The cat is inside.

Word by Word: Cat is inside.

Iekšā is an adverb and needs no noun.

Common Mistakes

  • Combining iekš with the locative.

    Es dzīvoju iekš Rīgā.
    Es dzīvoju Rīgā.

The locative Rīgā already means in Riga. Old iekš took the genitive, and modern Latvian does not use it at all.

  • Using iekš without a noun.

    Nāc iekš!
    Nāc iekšā!

Iekš is a preposition and needs a noun after it. For come in, use the adverb iekšā.
