-는 바람에
Because of, Due to
-는 바람에 is used to indicate that an unexpected or sudden event (the cause) led to a negative or undesirable outcome (the result). It translates to 'because of' or 'due to' but specifically with a negative connotation.
How It Works
-는 바람에 is a specific way to express a cause-and-effect relationship in Korean, focusing exclusively on negative outcomes that result from unforeseen circumstances. It emphasizes that the cause was not intended and led to an unfortunate result.
1. Negative Connotation
This is the most important feature. Unlike more neutral reason patterns like -아/어서 or -기 때문에, -는 바람에 is only used when the result is negative.
- Correct: 갑자기 손님이 오는 바람에 청소를 못 했어요. (Because guests suddenly came, I couldn't clean.)
- Incorrect: 선물을 받는 바람에 기분이 좋았어요. (Receiving a gift is positive, so this is unnatural.)
2. Attaches to Action Verbs Only
This pattern cannot be used with descriptive verbs (adjectives) like 좋다 (to be good) or 바쁘다 (to be busy), or with the copula 이다.
- Action Verb (O): 자다 (to sleep) → 자는 바람에
- Action Verb (O): 오다 (to come) → 오는 바람에
- Descriptive Verb (X): 춥다 (to be cold) → 춥는 바람에 (Incorrect)
3. Tense
The tense of the entire sentence is expressed in the final verb of the main clause. The action in the -는 바람에 clause is understood to have already occurred, causing the subsequent event.
- 버스를 놓치는 바람에 지각했어요. (Because I missed the bus, I was late.) - The missing of the bus happened, leading to the past event of being late.
4. Sentence Type Restriction
You cannot end a sentence using -는 바람에 with an imperative (command) or propositive (suggestion) form.
- Incorrect: 비가 오는 바람에 우산을 사세요. (Because it's raining, please buy an umbrella.)
- Incorrect: 버스를 놓치는 바람에 택시를 탑시다. (Because we missed the bus, let's take a taxi.)
For these situations, a pattern like -(으)니까 is more appropriate: 비가 오니까 우산을 사세요.

Common Mistakes
Using -는 바람에 for a positive or neutral outcome.
Not Quite열심히 공부하는 바람에 시험에 합격했어요.Better열심히 공부해서 시험에 합격했어요.-는 바람에 is strictly for negative results. Passing an exam is a positive outcome, so a neutral reason particle like -아/어서 or -기 때문에 should be used instead.
Using -는 바람에 with descriptive verbs (adjectives).
Not Quite날씨가 춥는 바람에 감기에 걸렸어요.Better날씨가 추워서 감기에 걸렸어요.This pattern can only be attached to action verbs. 춥다 (to be cold) is a descriptive verb. For descriptive verbs, use a different pattern like -아/어서 to state the reason.
Using a command or suggestion in the main clause.
Not Quite버스를 놓치는 바람에 지하철을 타세요.Better버스를 놓쳤으니까 지하철을 타세요.A sentence using -는 바람에 cannot end with an imperative (-세요) or propositive (-ㅂ시다) form. To give a command or suggestion based on a reason, -(으)니까 is the correct choice.

Related Patterns
- -아/어서Because of, Therefore
Both express cause and effect. However, -는 바람에 is only for unexpected, negative results, while -아/어서 is a neutral connector for general reasons and also cannot be followed by imperative or propositive clauses.
- -기 때문에Because
Both mean 'because'. -기 때문에 states a clear, objective reason for any outcome (positive, negative, or neutral). -는 바람에 specifically implies that the cause was sudden or unexpected and the result was negative.
- -ㄴ/는/ㄹ 탓에Because of, Due to
Very similar to -는 바람에 as both are used for negative reasons. -ㄴ/는 탓에 often carries a nuance of blaming someone or something for the negative result and can be used with both action and descriptive verbs.
- -느라고Because of -ing
Both can explain a negative outcome. -느라고 is used when the subject was occupied with one action, which prevented them from doing another. The subject of both clauses must be the same. -는 바람에 is broader and describes an external event causing a negative result, and the subjects can be different.
