-(으)면 되다

It's Okay if, It's Fine to

Level 2Sounds Like myeon doeda

-면 되다 is used to say that doing a certain action or being in a certain state is sufficient or all that is needed.

How It Works

This pattern is used to express that a certain action or state is all that is required to fulfill a condition or solve a problem. It's often translated as "you just have to...", "all you need to do is...", or "it's okay if...".

Conjugation Rules:
1. Vowel or ㄹ ending stem + -면 되다

  • 가다 (to go) → 가면 되다
  • 만들다 (to make) → 만들면 되다

2. Consonant ending stem (except ㄹ) + -으면 되다

  • 먹다 (to eat) → 먹으면 되다
  • 찾다 (to find) → 찾으면 되다

This pattern is very common in giving simple instructions or solutions. For example, if someone asks for directions, you can say "쭉 가면 돼요" (You just have to go straight).

It's also frequently used in questions to ask if a certain action is the correct or sufficient one to take. For example: "여기에 서명하면 돼요?" (Is it okay if I sign here? / Do I just need to sign here?).

Important Distinctions:

  • -면 되다 (Sufficiency): "This is enough."
e.g., 하루에 한 번 약을 먹으면 돼요. (You just need to take the medicine once a day.)
  • -아/어야 되다/하다 (Necessity/Obligation): "You must do this."
e.g., 매일 약을 먹어야 돼요. (You must take the medicine every day.)
  • -아/어도 되다 (Permission): "You are allowed to do this."
e.g., 지금 약을 먹어도 돼요. (You may take the medicine now.)

Examples (5)

  1. 여기서 오른쪽으로 가면 돼요.

You just have to go right from here.

Word by Word: Here from to the right if you go, it's okay.

  2. 이 서류에 서명만 하면 돼요?

Do I just need to sign this document?

Word by Word: This document on signature only if I do, is it okay?

  3. 너무 복잡하게 생각하지 말고 그냥 솔직하게 말하면 돼.

Don't think too complicatedly, you just have to speak honestly.

Word by Word: Too complicatedly don't think and just honestly if you speak, it's okay.

  4. 배고프면 이 빵을 먹으면 돼요.

If you're hungry, you can just eat this bread.

Word by Word: If hungry, this bread if you eat, it's okay.

  5. 창문을 열면 돼요. 너무 더워요.

You just need to open the window. It's too hot.

Word by Word: Window if you open, it's okay. Too hot.

This example shows the conjugation for a verb stem ending in ㄹ (열다). For the -(으)면 ending, stems ending in ㄹ are followed directly by -면, just like vowel stems.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing sufficiency (-면 되다) with necessity (-아/어야 되다).

Different Meaning시험에 합격하려면 공부를 많이 하면 돼요.
Better시험에 합격하려면 공부를 많이 해야 돼요.

The incorrect sentence implies that simply studying a lot is a sufficient condition to pass, which sounds too simplistic. The correct sentence uses -아/어야 되다 to correctly state that studying a lot is a necessary obligation.

  • Using -면 되다 to ask for permission instead of -아/어도 되다.

Different Meaning선생님, 질문 하나 하면 돼요?
    Better선생님, 질문 하나 해도 돼요?

The incorrect sentence asks, "Is asking one question the sufficient action to take?" which is awkward. The correct sentence uses -아/어도 되다 to properly ask for permission: "Teacher, may I ask a question?"
