-지 않아도 되다
Don't Have to, Not Necessary
Expresses 'don't have to' or 'it's not necessary to do' something.
How It Works
-지 않아도 되다 is used to tell someone that an action is not required or that there is no obligation.
Structure:
Verb/Adjective Stem + -지 않아도 되다
This grammar pattern is a combination of two other patterns:
1. -지 않다: A common way to negate verbs and adjectives.
2. -아/어도 되다: A pattern that grants permission, meaning 'it's okay to' or 'you may'.
When combined, the literal meaning is 'it is okay even if one does not do (the action)', which is naturally understood as 'you don't have to do it'.
This pattern is the direct opposite of expressing obligation with -아/어야 되다/하다 ('must' or 'have to').
Conjugation:
The 되다 part can be conjugated into different tenses and politeness levels:
- Present: -지 않아도 돼요 (polite), -지 않아도 돼 (casual)
- Past: -지 않아도 됐어요 (polite), -지 않아도 됐어 (casual)
- Future: -지 않아도 될 거예요 (polite), -지 않아도 될 거야 (casual)
A very similar expression is -ㄹ 필요가 없다, which means 'there is no need to'.
