〜ゆえ(に)

Because Of/due to

Level 5Sounds Like yue(ni)

〜ゆえ(に) is an advanced, formal expression used in writing and dramatic speech to state a logical or inevitable cause. It is the literary equivalent of から or ので.

How It Works

1. Usage and Nuance
〜ゆえ(に)(故に) is a stiff, formal marker of causality. While ために is the standard formal way to say 'because,' 〜ゆえ(に) carries a much heavier, sometimes fateful tone. It suggests that 'A' is the inherent reason why 'B' must happen. The 'に' is optional; omitting it (〜ゆえ) makes the expression sound even more clipped and literary.

2. Formation
It attaches to the plain form of verbs and adjectives, or to nouns:

  • Verbs: [Plain Form] + ゆえ(に) / がゆえ(に)
  • I-Adjectives: [Plain Form] + ゆえ(に) / がゆえ(に)
  • Na-Adjectives: [Stem] / [〜な] / [〜である] + ゆえ(に) / がゆえ(に) (e.g., 複雑ゆえ(ふくざつゆえ))
  • Nouns: [Direct] / [〜の] / [〜である] + ゆえ(に) / がゆえ(に)

3. Sentence-Initial Conjunction
ゆえに can also be used at the start of a sentence to mean 'therefore' or 'consequently,' similar to だから or したがって. For example: 彼は努力した。ゆえに、成功した。(かれはどりょくした。ゆえに、せいこうした。) - He made an effort. Therefore, he succeeded.

4. The 'Ga' Particle
You will often see 〜がゆえに. This 'ga' is a remnant of classical Japanese where it functioned like the modern の (possessive). Using 'ga' makes the expression sound even more archaic.

5. Noun-Modifying Form: 〜ゆえの
When the entire phrase modifies a noun, the form 〜ゆえの + Noun is used. This is common in set phrases describing consequences, such as 若さゆえの過ち(わかさゆえのあやまち - a mistake due to youth) or 貧しさゆえの悲劇(まずしさゆえのひげき - a tragedy born of poverty).

6. Restrictions
Because it is a statement of logical consequence, the second clause cannot be a command, invitation, or request. You cannot use it to say 'Because it's raining, let's go home.'

Examples (4)

  1. 期待しているがゆえに、彼には厳しいことを言うこともある。

Because I have high expectations of him, I sometimes say harsh things.

Word by Word: Expectations doing [possessive] reason-in, to him harsh things say fact also exists.

The speaker uses がゆえに to show that the harshness is a direct, logical result of their high expectations.

  2. 国民の無知ゆえに、この悲劇は繰り返された。

Due to the ignorance of the citizens, this tragedy was repeated.

Word by Word: Citizens' ignorance reason-in, this tragedy was repeated.

This demonstrates the use of a noun + ゆえに in a formal, historical context.

  3. 我思う、故に我あり。

    I think, therefore I am.

Word by Word: I think, reason-in I exist.

This is the famous Japanese translation of Descartes' 'Cogito, ergo sum,' using ゆえに as 'therefore'.

  4. 若さゆえの過ちを犯してしまった。

I committed a mistake due to my youth.

Word by Word: Youth reason's mistake committed (regret).

Here, ゆえ modifies a noun using the particle の, meaning 'a mistake of (caused by) youth'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using it with commands or invitations.

    危ないゆえに、入るな!
    危ないから、入るな!

〜ゆえ(に) is for stating objective reasons or logical consequences. It is too formal and grammatically inappropriate for direct commands or casual warnings.

  • Using it in casual conversation.

    腹減ったゆえに、ラーメン食いに行こう。
    お腹が空いたから、ラーメンを食べに行こう。

Using 〜ゆえ(に) in daily life sounds like you are acting in a period drama or being intentionally pompous.
