〜を経て

〜を経て(をへて) is a formal way to describe passing through a specific point—whether that is a physical place, a duration of time, or a series of experiences—to reach a final destination or result.

How It Works

The expression 〜を経て is derived from the verb 経る(へる), which means 'to pass through' or 'to elapse.' Note that learners occasionally misread 経て as 'えて' due to its visual similarity to 得る(える) or its common reading 'けい', but it is read as 'へて'. This is a JLPT N1 grammar point, reflecting its formal, written-heavy nature.

Connection Rule: This pattern is used by attaching directly to a Noun representing Time, Places, or Experiences/Processes (Noun + 〜を経て).

It functions in three primary ways:

  • Spatial: Indicating a transit point on a journey (e.g., 'Flying to Paris via Dubai'). For everyday speech, especially regarding flights and trains, 〜経由で(けいゆで) is the most common equivalent (e.g., ドバイ経由で).
  • Temporal: Indicating that a specific amount of time has passed before something happens (e.g., 'After 10 years of research...').
  • Process/Experience: Indicating a necessary stage or hardship one went through (e.g., 'After many trials and errors...').

Additionally, it can be used in the adjectival form 〜を経ての to modify a noun, such as in the phrase 「10年の時を経ての再会」(じゅうねんのときをへてのさいかい - A reunion after 10 years).

Unlike simple time markers like 後で, 〜を経て emphasizes that the intermediate stage was a significant part of the journey or development. It is a formal expression and should be avoided in casual speech, where the て-form of verbs like 通る(とおる) or 〜てから would be more natural. Crucially, when contrasting with 〜を通じて / 〜を通して, only 〜を経て can be used for physical transit locations (e.g., ドバイを経てパリへ行く is correct, but ドバイを通じてパリへ行く is ungrammatical). Furthermore, regarding time, 〜を通じて means 'throughout' a continuous period (e.g., 1年を通じて - throughout the year), while 〜を経て means 'after' a period has elapsed (e.g., 1年を経て - after one year).

Common Mistakes

  • Using the simple te-form for formal transit points in writing.

    ドバイを通ってパリへ行きました。
    ドバイを経てパリへ行きました。

While 通って is correct for daily conversation, in formal reports or travelogues, 〜を経て is preferred to indicate a significant transit point or stage.

  • Using 〜を経て in very casual conversation.

    新宿を経て学校に行ったよ。
    新宿を通って学校に行ったよ。

〜を経て is very formal. In casual daily life, use the verb 通る(とおる) in its て-form (通って) to describe your route.
