と

Hakata: A Casual Explanatory Question

Level 2Sounds Like toRegional Speech

Sentence-final と can ask a casual explanatory question in Fukuoka/Hakata speech.

How It Works

何を食べると? asks what someone is going to eat. Use the full sentence and the conversational question to identify this ending.

The same regional explanatory material also appears in statements such as -とよ, so do not interpret every occurrence as a question solely from its spelling.

It can follow regional negative and aspect forms. Those forms retain their own meaning; the final question ending does not erase the ongoing/result-state distinction.
