〜における
In/at (Attributive)
〜における is a formal particle that connects two nouns. It functions as an adjective phrase meaning 'in', 'at', or 'during', specifying the context (Noun A) for the following noun (Noun B).
How It Works
〜における is a formal compound particle derived from the particle に + the verb 置く(おく) + the classical perfective/stative auxiliary verb り(完了・存続). The kanji 於 is not ateji; rather, its reading is a kun-yomi established through Kanbun kundoku (assigning Japanese readings to Chinese characters based on their meaning). Crucially, it is the attributive (noun-modifying) version of the formal written(書き言葉)particle 〜において. It strictly follows the structure [Noun A] + における + [Noun B], where Noun A (the location, time, context, or agent/actor) modifies Noun B. Noun B is very frequently an action noun (a suru-verb stem like 決定, 研究) or an abstract concept (問題, 役割). Generally, [Noun A] + における + [Noun B] translates to '[Noun B] in / at / during / regarding / by [Noun A]'. For example, compare how they connect differently: 会議において決定した(かいぎにおいてけっていした - Decided at the meeting)modifies a verb, whereas 会議における決定(かいぎにおけるけってい - The decision at the meeting)modifies a noun. Note that you may also encounter the alternative attributive form 〜においての, which is grammatically valid and means essentially the same thing, though 〜における is generally more common and preferred in formal writing. While usually written in hiragana, you may encounter the kanji form 於ける(おける)in legal or highly academic texts. In modern Japanese, it is used in formal writing 書き言葉(かきことば)and formal spoken contexts such as news broadcasts, academic lectures, and business presentations.
Key Functions:
- Physical Location: Specifying a place (e.g., 'safety in the factory').
- Time/Period: Specifying an era or moment (e.g., 'customs in the Edo period').
- Abstract Field: Specifying a domain of study or activity (e.g., 'research in linguistics').
- Circumstance: Specifying a situation (e.g., 'response in an emergency').
- Regarding / In relation to: Indicating relation or respect to a topic or person (e.g., 現代社会における問題(げんだいしゃかいにおけるもんだい - Problems regarding modern society)).
- Agent / Actor: Specifying the entity performing the action (e.g., 政府における対応(せいふにおけるたいおう - The response by the government)).
Important Restrictions:
- Mundane Action Restriction: It is unnatural to use 〜における for everyday, mundane actions or physical locations (e.g., 'cooking in the kitchen'), even in formal writing. It is reserved for significant, abstract, or large-scale contexts.
- Not for Tools/Means: Unlike the English word 'in', it cannot be used for tools or means (e.g., 'writing in pencil'). It only describes the setting or context.
Register Note:
Avoid using this in casual conversation. Using it with friends will make you sound like a textbook or a legal document. In neutral or spoken Japanese, it is almost always replaced by で + の(での), or sometimes just の, for locations, times, and circumstances. For example: 学校における教育(がっこうにおけるきょういく - Formal)→ 学校での教育(がっこうでのきょういく - Everyday). For the 'regarding / in relation to' usage, everyday equivalents like について + の(についての)or に関して in its attributive form(に関する)should be used instead.
