ものだから

Because (Excuse)

Level 3Sounds Like monodakara

Used to provide a reason or justification, especially when making an excuse or explaining an unexpected result. It carries a nuance of 'I couldn't help it' or 'Please understand my situation.'

How It Works

This pattern is primarily used in spoken Japanese to explain a cause that led to an unintended outcome or to describe a natural consequence of a situation. It is very common when apologizing or declining invitations.

Key Characteristics:

  • Subjective Excuse: It frames the reason as a 'thing' (もの) that happened, making the speaker's actions seem like a natural consequence of the situation rather than a deliberate choice.
  • Softening: It sounds less blunt than から because it emphasizes external circumstances.
  • Register: In casual speech, it often becomes もんだから. In polite or business contexts, ものですから is used.
  • Shortened Form: In very casual conversation, it is often shortened to 〜もんで at the end of a sentence to trail off apologetically.

Grammar Rules:

  • Verbs: Plain form (Dictionary/Past) + ものだから
  • い-Adjectives: Plain form + ものだから
  • な-Adjectives: Dictionary form + な + ものだから
  • Nouns: Noun + な + ものだから (Note: Use な, not だ)

Constraint: The following clause cannot be a command, request, or suggestion. It must describe a result that has already occurred or a current state.

Examples (4)

  1. 電車が遅れたものだから、遅刻してしまいました。

Because the train was late (and I couldn't help it), I ended up being late.

Word by Word: Train (subject) was late because, lateness did (regret).

The speaker uses ものだから to emphasize that the lateness was due to the train, not their own lack of effort.

  2. あまりに安かったものだから、つい買ってしまった。

It was so cheap (that was the reason) I bought it without thinking.

Word by Word: Very much was cheap because, unintentionally bought (regret).

Here, the 'cheapness' is presented as the external factor that 'made' the speaker buy the item.

  3. 初めてなものですから、勝手がわからなくてすみません。

Since it's my first time (please understand), I'm sorry I don't know how things work.

Word by Word: First time because (polite), way of doing not knowing sorry.

Using the polite ものですから softens the apology by explaining the lack of experience as the reason for the confusion.

  4. 道が混んでいたもんだから、予定より遅くなりました。

The roads were crowded, so I'm later than planned.

Word by Word: Road (subject) was crowded because (casual), plan than became late.

もんだから is the casual, contracted version of the pattern, common in daily conversation.

Common Mistakes

  • Using it with commands or suggestions.

    雨なものだから、帰りましょう。
    雨なので、帰りましょう。

ものだから cannot be followed by a suggestion like 'Let's go home.' Use ので or から for requests and suggestions.

  • Using だ instead of な for nouns.

    子供だものだから、許してください。
    子供なものだから、許してください。

When attaching to a noun, you must use な (the attributive form) rather than the casual copula だ.

ものだからLevel 3Because (Excuse)

Learn This First

To understand 'ものだから', you need to know how to express basic reasons using 'から'. Since 'もの' is a noun, you must also understand how to modify nouns with verbs and adjectives. Finally, the use of the copula 'だ' (or 'な' for な-adjectives) is necessary to link the noun 'もの' to the particle 'から'.
