前に
Before
[Action A] + 前に + [Action B]
Means 'Before A, B happens.' Action A always uses the dictionary form.
How It Works
前に is a fundamental pattern for sequencing events in Japanese. The most important rule to remember is that the verb preceding it must always be in the dictionary form (non-past), even if the entire sentence is describing a past event.
1. With Verbs:
Use the [Dictionary Form] + 前に.
Example: 寝る前に (Before sleeping).
2. With Nouns:
Use [Noun] + の + 前に.
Example: 食事の前に (Before the meal).
3. With Time Durations:
Use [Time Period] + 前に. Note that the particle の is not used here. In this context, it often translates to 'ago'.
Example: 3年前に (Three years ago).
4. With Adjectives:
Adjectives cannot connect directly. They must first be converted using なる in its dictionary form.
Example: 暗くなる前に (Before it gets dark).
Spatial Usage:
It is also used spatially to mean 'in front of'. Use に for existence (駅の前にあります / It is in front of the station) and で for actions (駅の前で待ちます / I will wait in front of the station).
Examples (5)
- 日本へ来る前に、日本語を勉強しました。
Before I came to Japan, I studied Japanese.
Word by Word: Japan to come before, Japanese language (object) study did.
Notice that the verb is in the dictionary form even though the studying happened in the past.
- 寝る前に、薬を飲んでください。
Please take your medicine before you go to sleep.
Word by Word: Sleep before, medicine (object) drink please.
This uses the dictionary form followed by the request 'please drink'.
- テストの前に、復習をします。
I will review before the test.
Word by Word: Test (possessive) before, review (object) do.
When using a noun like 'test', you must add the particle の before the pattern.
- 食事の前に手を洗います。
I wash my hands before meals.
Word by Word: Meal (possessive) before hands (object) wash.
A common daily routine example using a noun.
- 3年前に、京都へ行きました。
I went to Kyoto three years ago.
Word by Word: 3 years before, Kyoto to went.
When used with a specific duration of time, the particle の is omitted, and it translates to 'ago'.
Common Mistakes
Using the past tense before 前に.
日本へ来た前に、勉強しました。日本へ来る前に、勉強しました。Even if the main action is in the past, the verb before this pattern must always be in the dictionary form.
Forgetting the particle の with nouns.
クラス前にコーヒーを飲みました。クラスの前にコーヒーを飲みました。Nouns require the possessive particle の to connect to this pattern.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand '前に' (before), you need to know how to modify nouns with verbs or other nouns. Specifically, when used with a verb, the verb must be in its dictionary (plain present) form. Additionally, the particle 'に' is required to mark the temporal relationship.
- Noun Modification
The pattern '前に' functions by treating the preceding verb or noun as a modifier for the noun '前' (front/before).
