はる
Osaka: Referring Respectfully to Another Person's Action
Osaka-centered はる can add respectful treatment when talking about another person's action.
How It Works
先生はこの本を読みはる refers respectfully to the teacher's reading. The respectful form concerns the person doing the action; it does not make the speaker's own action humble.
Local stem shapes and the strength of respectful treatment vary by speaker and relationship. はる can appear in ordinary conversation and is not a substitute for every formal honorific such as お読みになる. Shared です/ます and formal honorific forms remain available.
This card teaches the nonpast はる form attached to the reviewed Osaka masu-stem. Past forms, contracted short stems and constructions such as てはる require their own analysis. Do not add はる to a noun, an adjective or an already complete polite predicate.
