Negative That-Clauses

Level 4

Nach introduces a negative complement: Sílim nach bhfuil sé anseo. Many simple-past complements use nár.

How It Works

Nach introduces a negative complement: Sílim nach bhfuil sé anseo. Many simple-past complements use nár.

Nach introduces a negative complement in many tense frames. It contains the negative force itself, so the embedded clause does not also begin with ní. Use the appropriate dependent verb, as in nach bhfuil, and learn nár for the relevant simple-past complements.

Examples (3)

  1. Sílim nach bhfuil sé anseo.

I think he is not here.

  2. Dúirt sí nach raibh sí réidh.

She said that she was not ready.

  3. Tá a fhios agam nach dtuigeann tú.

I know that you do not understand.
