tidak selalu

Not Always

Level 5

Tidak selalu means not always. It rejects a claim that holds at every relevant time or in every relevant case, without saying how often it does hold.

How It Works

In Indonesian, tidak selalu is a fixed phrase used to express that a condition or action is not constant. It is a neutral expression that appears immediately before the word or phrase it modifies.

1. Usage with Verbs and Adjectives
It can precede verbs to describe habits that have exceptions, or adjectives to describe states that are not permanent or universal.

  • Dia tidak selalu datang tepat waktu. (He doesn't always arrive on time.)
  • Hidup tidak selalu mudah. (Life is not always easy.)

2. Nuance vs. Total Negation
Unlike tidak (not) or tidak pernah (never), tidak selalu rejects an always claim. It often suggests that the event sometimes happens, but does not logically specify a positive frequency. It also applies across cases: Cuaca mendung tidak selalu berarti akan turun hujan rejects a universal connection between cloudiness and rain.

3. Placement
The ordinary model places tidak selalu before the predicate in its scope. Other modifiers may follow it, as in tidak selalu harus dilakukan. Changing its position can change which part of the statement is negated.

Examples (4)

  1. Orang kaya tidak selalu merasa bahagia.

Rich people do not always feel happy.

Word by Word: Person rich not always feel happy.

Tidak selalu scopes over merasa bahagia, feel happy. The statement denies constant or universal happiness among rich people, without giving a frequency.

  2. Aturan tata bahasa tidak selalu diikuti dalam percakapan sehari-hari.

Grammar rules are not always followed in daily conversation.

Word by Word: Rules arrangement language not always followed in conversation daily.

This uses the passive voice (diikuti) to show that the action of following rules is not constant.

  3. Obat ini efektif, tetapi tidak selalu memberikan hasil yang instan.

This medicine is effective, but it doesn't always provide instant results.

Word by Word: Medicine this effective, but not always give result which instant.

In this sentence, 'tidak selalu' modifies the verb 'memberikan' (to give/provide).

  4. Harga barang di pasar tidak selalu stabil.

Prices of goods in the market are not always stable.

Word by Word: Price goods at market not always stable.

This demonstrates 'tidak selalu' modifying the adjective 'stabil' to describe market fluctuations.

Common Mistakes

  • Using never when the intended meaning is only not always.

Dia tidak pernah datang tepat waktu.
Dia tidak selalu datang tepat waktu.

The first sentence is grammatical but says the person never arrives on time. For the intended weaker statement not always on time, use tidak selalu. Belum tentu focuses on uncertainty or lack of a guarantee; tidak selalu can also reject a generalization across cases, so Pintar tidak selalu berarti sukses is valid.
