seraya
Literary Simultaneous Action
Seraya links accompanying actions, commonly by the same participant. It resembles sambil and is frequent in narrative writing, without being forbidden in speech.
How It Works
The conjunction seraya is used for describing simultaneity in Indonesian. While it functions similarly to sambil, the following points help explain its use:
- Literary Register: It is common in narrative and journalistic writing and may sound literary in some conversations. That register tendency is not a grammatical ban on spoken use.
- Shared-Participant Model: In the usual accompanying-action model, the same participant carries out both actions. To make two different actors explicit, a clear alternative is sementara for simultaneous time; sedangkan instead highlights contrast. This is guidance for the basic model, not proof that all extended seraya clauses are impossible.
- Syntactic Position: It most commonly appears between two verbs or clauses (e.g., A seraya B). However, it can also be placed at the beginning of a sentence to set the scene for the main action.
- Verb Pairing: It is frequently paired with active verbs, particularly those involving speech (berkata, berucap) or gestures (tersenyum, melambaikan).
Examples (4)
- Ia tersenyum seraya melambaikan tangan kepada kerumunan itu.
He/she smiled while waving to the crowd.
Word by Word: He/she smile while wave hand to crowd that.
This shows the most common usage: linking two physical actions (smiling and waving) performed by the same person.
- “Boleh,” katanya seraya menyerahkan salah satu pensilnya kepada Ali.
“Sure,” he/she said while handing one of his/her pencils to Ali.
Word by Word: “Allowed,” said-he/she while hand over one of his/her pencils to Ali.
In literature, 'seraya' is often used to describe an action that accompanies a line of dialogue.
- Seraya menanti fajar, sang penyair menuliskan baris-baris terakhir puisinya.
While waiting for dawn, the poet wrote the final lines of their poem.
Word by Word: While wait dawn, the poet write down lines last of their poem.
Here, 'seraya' is used at the beginning of the sentence to establish the background action (waiting) for the main event (writing).
- Presiden memberikan pidato seraya menekankan pentingnya persatuan nasional.
The President gave a speech while emphasizing the importance of national unity.
Word by Word: President give speech while emphasize importance-of unity national.
This demonstrates the formal, journalistic register of 'seraya' in a political context.
Common Mistakes
Using seraya when the intended relationship is after completion.
Ia pulang seraya menyelesaikan pekerjaannya.Ia pulang setelah menyelesaikan pekerjaannya. For the intended meaning that the work was completed before going home, use setelah. The seraya sentence is grammatical with an accompanying-action reading: completing the work while going home. Register alone does not make it incorrect.
