sedangkan
Balanced Contrast with Sedangkan
Sedangkan links contrasting facts within a sentence, often translated whereas or while. Different subjects are a common model, not a requirement that defines every use.
How It Works
The conjunction sedangkan is a staple of formal and semi-formal Indonesian. It functions as an intra-sentential coordinator, meaning it connects two independent clauses within a single sentence.
Key Characteristics:
- Parallel Contrast: It commonly highlights differences between distinct entities, but also contrasts circumstances. For example: 'Subject A does X, sedangkan Subject B does Y.'
- Punctuation: In standard Indonesian writing, you must place a comma before sedangkan.
- Syntax: The standard coordinating model keeps it between the linked clauses. For a self-contained new sentence expressing however, use namun instead.
- Register: It is highly frequent in journalism, academic writing, and formal speeches. In these formal contexts, sementara is often used as a stylistic alternative. Conversation also uses tapi or padahal.
Sedangkan vs. Sedang:
Do not confuse this conjunction with the aspect marker sedang, which indicates an action in progress (like '-ing' in English). Sedangkan is a fixed function word and does not change form.
Scope of the Comparison: TBBI gives Dia langsung mengkritik, sedangkan duduk perkaranya saja masih belum jelas: the facts contrast without presenting two people performing parallel actions. Saya lapar, tetapi saya tidak mau makan is a clear ordinary but statement; repeating saya does not by itself make a sedangkan version structurally impossible. Initial Sedangkan can occur in discourse continuation; the standard sentence-linking model and the punctuation of a standalone Namun, ... are separate teaching points.

- Adik saya suka matematika, sedangkan saya lebih suka bahasa.
My younger sibling likes math, whereas I prefer languages.
Word by Word: Younger-sibling my like mathematics, whereas I more like languages.
This shows a classic balanced contrast between two different subjects (the sibling and 'I') and their preferences.
- Edisi pertama terbit tahun 1988, sedangkan edisi kedua terbit tahun 2000.
The first edition was published in 1988, while the second edition was published in 2000.
Word by Word: Edition first publish year 1988, whereas edition second publish year 2000.
Used here to contrast two different facts (publication years) regarding two different objects (editions).
- Ayah sedang membaca koran, sedangkan Ibu sedang memasak di dapur.
Father is reading the newspaper, while Mother is cooking in the kitchen.
Word by Word: Father [in-progress] read newspaper, whereas Mother [in-progress] cook at kitchen.
This example demonstrates the difference between the aspect marker 'sedang' (in progress) and the conjunction 'sedangkan' (contrast).
- Mobil itu sangat mahal, sedangkan mobil ini cukup murah.
That car is very expensive, whereas this car is quite cheap.
Word by Word: Car that very expensive, whereas car this enough cheap.
Contrasting the qualities of two different items using 'sedangkan'.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting the comma before 'sedangkan'.
Dia tinggi sedangkan adiknya pendek.Dia tinggi, sedangkan adiknya pendek.EYD V section2 requires a comma before sedangkan when it joins contrasting clauses in a compound sentence. The displayed written model therefore has Dia tinggi, sedangkan adiknya pendek.
How It Connects

To use 'sedangkan' effectively, you need to understand how to form basic sentences and how to link ideas using simple conjunctions. 'Sedangkan' is a more advanced way to contrast two parallel situations, often used in writing to show a balanced difference between two subjects.
