Requests With man
Softening a Request
An attested request pattern is verb + short participant form + man.
How It Works
Form an instruction with the appropriate voice and participant marking. In the illustrated pattern, place man after the short participant form near the beginning of the clause. Write the particle separately; it has no person or number endings.
Compare Umayka ditoy, “Come here,” with Umayka man ditoy, “Please come here.” The action and singular addressee remain the same. In patient-focus requests, mo identifies the singular performer; yo addresses several people or respectfully one person.
The references translate such requests with “please.” Their examples support this placement but do not supply a complete ordering or intonation account. Politeness also depends on delivery and context.
