sá sem / það sem
The One Who and What (Sá Sem, Það Sem)
sá sem means the one who and það sem means what: Sá sem kemur fyrstur fær kaffi. Það sem ég vil er frí.
How It Works
The one who, those who, what. Icelandic builds these from the pointing word sá, sú, það (see sá/sú/það) plus a sem-clause:
- Sá sem kemur fyrstur fær kaffi. (The one who comes first gets coffee.)
- Sú sem syngur er systir mín. (The one singing is my sister.)
- Þeir sem vilja geta komið með. (Those who want to can come along.)
- Það sem ég vil er frí. (What I want is time off.)
Whole phrase first, verb second. In Sá sem kemur fyrstur fær kaffi, the whole phrase sá sem kemur fyrstur takes first place, and the main verb fær comes second (verb-second word order).
The first word takes the main sentence's case. sá and það change for their role in the MAIN sentence, not for the sem-clause:
- Ég þekki þann sem vann. (þekkja takes the accusative: sá → þann)
- Við hjálpum þeim sem þurfa hjálp. (hjálpa takes the dative: þeir → þeim)
- Ég trúi ekki því sem hann sagði. (trúa takes the dative: það → því; see dative verbs)
The forms are sá, þann, þeim, þess; sú, þá, þeirri, þeirrar; það, það, því, þess; masculine plural þeir, þá, þeim, þeirra.
allt sem and ekkert sem. Allt sem þú sagðir var satt (Everything you said was true). Það er ekkert sem ég get gert (There is nothing I can do). See allur.
Not hvað. English uses what here, but Icelandic uses það sem. hvað is for questions, including indirect ones: Ég veit ekki hvað hann vill (I don't know what he wants).
sá and sem can also be split, as in the saying Sá hlær best sem síðast hlær (He who laughs last laughs best).

Common Mistakes
Using hvað for "what" at the start of a statement.
Hvað ég vil er frí.Það sem ég vil er frí.hvað asks a question. For "what" meaning "the thing that", use það sem.
Keeping það after a verb that takes the dative.
Ég trúi ekki það sem hann sagði.Ég trúi ekki því sem hann sagði.trúa takes the dative, so það must become því. The case comes from the main verb.
