allur
All (Allur)
allur means all or whole: allur dagurinn (the whole day), öll fjölskyldan, allt húsið, allir krakkarnir.
How It Works
Agreement. allur takes the gender, number and case of its noun:
- allur dagurinn (masculine), öll fjölskyldan (feminine), allt húsið (neuter)
- allir krakkarnir, allar stelpurnar, öll börnin (plural)
The forms.
- masculine: allur, allan, öllum, alls
- feminine: öll, alla, allri, allrar
- neuter: allt, allt, öllu, alls
- plural: allir, allar, öll; accusative alla, allar, öll; dative öllum; genitive allra
The whole. For the whole of one thing, the noun has the attached article: allan daginn (all day), alla vikuna (all week), allt árið (all year), með allri fjölskyldunni (with the whole family). A few set phrases have no article: um allan heim (all over the world), um allt land (all over the country).
Everyone and everything. Alone, allir means everyone and allt means everything: Allir vilja frí. Allt er tilbúið. allir is the traditional word for everyone. You will also hear the neuter öll, which many people now use to include everyone.
After the verb. allur can also follow the verb and still agree: Krakkarnir fóru allir heim. Við erum öll hérna.
Fixed phrases. Allt í lagi (okay), alls ekki (not at all), alla vega (anyway, at least).

Common Mistakes
Not making allur agree with a feminine noun.
Allur fjölskyldan kom í mat.Öll fjölskyldan kom í mat.fjölskylda is feminine, so allur becomes öll.
Leaving out the article for "the whole".
Ég var heima allan dag.Ég var heima allan daginn. For all day or the whole day, the noun takes the article: allan daginn.
Keeping the nominative after a preposition.
Hún talaði við allir.Hún talaði við alla.við takes the accusative, so allir becomes alla.
