annar
Other and Second (Annar)
annar means other, another or second: Viltu annan kaffibolla? Hún býr í öðru landi.
How It Works
Another, one more. Viltu annan kaffibolla? (Would you like another cup of coffee?)
Different. Hún býr í öðru landi. (She lives in another country.) einhver annar is someone else and eitthvað annað is something else.
Second. annar is also the ordinal number second: Liðið lenti í öðru sæti (The team came second). Annar í jólum is 26 December.
Others. In the plural it means others: Hugsaðu líka um aðra.
The forms. The stem changes between ann-, önn-, að- and öð-:
- masculine: annar, annan, öðrum, annars
- feminine: önnur, aðra, annarri, annarrar
- neuter: annað, annað, öðru, annars
- plural: aðrir, aðrar, önnur; accusative aðra, aðrar, önnur; dative öðrum; genitive annarra
