Ordinal Numbers

fyrsti (1st), annar (2nd), þriðji (3rd), fjórði (4th) ... They change with the noun: fyrsti dagurinn, fyrsta vikan.

How It Works

First to tenth. fyrsti, annar, þriðji, fjórði, fimmti, sjötti, sjöundi, áttundi, níundi, tíundi. Then ellefti, tólfti, tuttugasti (20th). For 21st, both parts are ordinals: tuttugasti og fyrsti.

Forms. Most ordinals follow the weak adjective pattern:

  • masculine: fyrsti (nominative), fyrsta (other cases)
  • feminine: fyrsta (nominative), fyrstu (other cases)
  • neuter: fyrsta
  • plural: fyrstu

So: fyrsti dagurinn (the first day), fyrsta vikan (the first week), fyrsta árið (the first year), á þriðju hæð (on the third floor).

annar. "Second" is the same word as "other" (annar), with its own forms: annar (m), önnur (f), annað (n), dative öðrum, annarri, öðru. Hún lenti í öðru sæti (She came second).

For the first time. í fyrsta sinn or í fyrsta skipti. See einu sinni/tvisvar.

Writing. A period after a number shows it is an ordinal: 3. maí (the third of May), 2. hæð (second floor), 21. öldin (the 21st century).

    hæð is feminine and dative after á, so þriðju.

    sæti is neuter and dative after í, so annar becomes öðru.

  5. Þetta er fjórða barnið þeirra.

    This is their fourth child.

    barn is neuter, so fjórða.

  6. Tíminn byrjar 5. september.

    The class starts on 5 September.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the strong form before a definite noun.

    Þetta er fyrstur dagurinn minn.
    Þetta er fyrsti dagurinn minn.

    Before a noun with the article, ordinals take the weak form: fyrsti.

  • Not matching the ordinal to a feminine noun.

    Við búum á þriðji hæð.
    Við búum á þriðju hæð.

    hæð is feminine and dative here, so the ordinal is þriðju.

  • Writing an ordinal without the period.

    Hún á afmæli 3 maí.
    Hún á afmæli 3. maí.

    Written ordinals need a period after the digits.
