Nifal Passives and Changes of State
נפעל includes passive events, changes of state and other lexical meanings. נכתב can mean was written, while נכנס means entered.
How It Works
A Passive Event
דנה כתבה את הספר can be recast as הספר נכתב על ידי דנה. The affected book becomes the subject. The writer can be omitted when unknown or irrelevant without turning the book into an actor.
A Change of State
הדלת נפתחה and הכד נשבר focus on opening or breaking. The sentence may leave the cause unstated; that alone does not prove there was no agent. A phrase such as מעצמה can explicitly present a spontaneous event.
A Separate Lexical Meaning
נכנס means entered and נפגש can mean met. They are not automatically passive translations of a simple קל verb. Learn each actual meaning and its preposition pattern. The form family helps recognize morphology after the event’s relationships are understood.
