Hitpa'el in the Present

Level 2

A common Hitpa’el present set is מתלבש, מתלבשת, מתלבשים and מתלבשות. Many verbs involve the subject, but the family has several meanings.

How It Works

Use the Learned Form

Choose מתלבש for masculine singular, מתלבשת for feminine singular, and the appropriate plural. The present begins with מת in this regular model, while the infinitive is להתלבש.

More Than Reflexive

מתלבש can describe dressing oneself. מתכתב describes exchanging written messages, and מתעניין means is interested. Learn the word’s meaning rather than attaching an English reflexive meaning to every root.

Not Always the Same Letters

Some initial root sounds change the order or sound of the pattern, as in משתתף and מצטרף. Those are real Hitpa’el verbs too. Their forms belong in the dedicated initial-sound entry, not in a universal מת-plus-root generator.
