אמור + Infinitive
Expected or Planned Actions
אמור presents an action as expected or supposed to happen. The infinitive names the expected action.
How It Works
The Form Matches the Subject
Use אמור, אמורה, אמורים, אמורות with the subject’s gender and number. The next verb is an infinitive: היא אמורה להגיע and הן אמורות לשלוח הודעה.
An Expected Action
אמור presents an action as expected or supposed to happen. הפגישה אמורה להתחיל בשמונה reports the expected starting time. It reports an expectation rather than the completed action.
An Expectation in the Past
Add the appropriate form of היה for a past expectation: הייתי אמור להגיע מוקדם. In הייתי אמור להגיע מוקדם, אבל התעכבתי, the second clause tells us that the speaker was delayed.
