גם אם means even if. It presents a possible condition and says that the main result or decision still applies.

How It Works

A Concessive Condition

גם אם היא לא תבוא, נמשיך says that her possible absence will not stop us continuing. The condition can be positive or negative; the connector itself does not negate it.

Read the Example's Situation

In גם אם ירד גשם, נלך, the speaker says the plan will stand if rain occurs. The sentence does not establish that rain will occur. Read what is presented as a condition in this sentence rather than using the connector to decide whether every possible condition is true.

Order and Emphasis

The clause can come first or later: נלך גם אם ירד גשם. In these examples, גם emphasizes that the stated obstacle will not prevent the main action. The verbs retain the forms required by their subjects. Keep it with the if phrase when that complete even-if relationship is intended.
