o máis + Adjective + de

Superlatives

Level 2

To say the most or the -est, use the article + máis + adjective: o máis alto (the tallest). Use de for the group: o máis alto da clase (the tallest in the class).

How It Works

Without a noun: article + máis / menos + adjective: Ana é a máis alta, Este é o menos caro.

With a noun: article + noun + máis / menos + adjective: o río máis longo de Galicia. The article appears only once.

The group: de introduces the group or place, and it joins the article: da clase, do mundo. See contractions of de.

Irregular forms: use mellor, peor, maior, menor with the article, never máis mellor: o mellor restaurante da cidade.

With a clause: a que clause can follow instead of de: É o libro máis interesante que lin.

Agreement: the article and the adjective agree with the noun: as praias máis bonitas. See adjective agreement.

Very, without comparing: to say very tall, use moi alto or the -ísimo ending: altísimo.

Common Mistakes

  • Repeating the article after the noun.

É a rúa a máis longa de Lugo.
É a rúa máis longa de Lugo.

In Galician the article appears only once, before the noun.

  • Adding máis to an irregular comparative.

É o máis mellor da clase.
    É o mellor da clase.

Mellor already contains the idea of more, so the superlative is just o mellor.
