min / ti After Prepositions

Pronouns After Prepositions

Level 2

After a preposition, eu changes to min: para min (for me). The other pronouns look the same as subject pronouns: sen ti (without you), para ela (for her), de nós (about us).

How It Works

The forms:

  • eu → para min
  • ti → para ti
  • el, ela, vostede → para el, para ela, para vostede
  • nós, vós → para nós, para vós
  • eles, elas, vostedes → para eles, para elas, para vostedes

Any preposition: the same forms follow a, de, en, para, por, sen, sobre, ata and others: Pensa en min (She thinks about me), Fíxeno por ti (I did it for you).

The exception, con: con + min and con + ti become comigo and contigo. Never write con min.

Contractions: de and en join el, ela, eles, elas: É amigo dela (He is her friend), Confío nel (I trust him). See del, dela, nel, nela.

Eu before an infinitive: when the pronoun is the subject of a following infinitive, it keeps its subject form: Trouxo o libro para eu ler (He brought the book for me to read). Without an infinitive, use min: O libro é para min. This uses the personal infinitive.

With a for emphasis: a + min, a + ti and the others can highlight a person: A min gústame. See stressed pronouns for emphasis.

Examples (6)

  1. Este regalo é para min?

    Is this present for me?

Word by Word: This present is for me?

    After para, eu becomes min.

  2. Non podo vivir sen ti.

    I cannot live without you.

Word by Word: Not can-I live without you.

Ti keeps the same form after a preposition.

  3. Falan moito de ti.

They talk about you a lot.

Word by Word: Talk-they much of you.

  4. Pensa moito en min.

She thinks about me a lot.

Word by Word: Thinks much in me.

    The same min follows en.

  5. É amigo dela.

    He is her friend.

Word by Word: Is friend of-her.

de + ela contracts to dela.

  6. Isto é para vostede.

    This is for you.

Word by Word: This is for you(formal).

Vostede keeps its form after a preposition.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the subject form eu after a preposition.

    O libro é para eu.
    O libro é para min.

After a preposition, me is min. Eu only follows para when it is the subject of an infinitive: para eu ler.

  • Using the Spanish form mí.

    Pensa en mí.
    Pensa en min.

The Galician form is min, spelled with n and no accent.

  • Using min after con.

    Vén con min.
    Vén comigo.

Con is the exception: con + min is written comigo.
