pinaka- + Adjective

Superlative Degree

Level 1

The prefix pinaka- is added to an adjective to indicate that something has the highest degree of a quality compared to others in a set (e.g., 'the fastest', 'the most beautiful').

How It Works

The superlative degree identifies one member (or a specific group) that possesses a quality to the highest extent.

1. Formation & Spelling Rules:

  • Singular: Attach pinaka- directly to the full adjective (e.g., mabilis becomes pinakamabilis; bago becomes pinakabago). It is also used with preference words like gusto (pinakagusto, "like the most") and ayaw (pinakaayaw, "dislike the most").
  • Spelling: Do not use a hyphen, even if the base word starts with a vowel (e.g., pinakauna). A hyphen is only used before proper nouns or unassimilated foreign loanwords.
  • Plural: For adjectives with the ma- prefix, you can use reduplication on the first syllable of the root (e.g., pinakamagaganda). You can also use the plural marker mga (e.g., ang mga pinakamaganda), or combine both (e.g., ang mga pinakamagaganda). However, for root-word adjectives (like bago or mura), do not use reduplication (e.g., pinakababago is incorrect); you must rely solely on mga (e.g., ang mga pinakabago).

2. The Role of 'Ang':
When you use the focused phrase marker (ang) before the superlative, it acts as a noun phrase meaning "the [adjective]-est one" (e.g., Siya ang pinakamaliit - "He/She is the smallest one"). If the superlative acts as an adjective predicate in a predicate-first sentence, ang is omitted (e.g., Pinakamaliit siya - "He/She is smallest").

3. Word Order and Linkers:
You can place the adjective before or after the noun using the linker:

  • Adjective + Noun: pinakamalaking aso (biggest dog)
  • Noun + Adjective: asong pinakamalaki (dog that is biggest)

4. Comparison Context & Common Pitfalls:
To specify the group, category, or location being compared against, use the oblique marker sa. For example, pinakamatalino sa klase (smartest in the class) or pinakamalaki sa Pilipinas (biggest in the Philippines). To emphasize the comparison generally, you can add sa lahat (of all) at the end of the phrase.

Important: Do not confuse pinaka- ("the most") with the prefix napaka- ("very" or "extremely"). Pinakamaganda means "the most beautiful", while napakaganda means "very beautiful".

5. Locational and Adverbial Uses:

  • Locations: Attach pinaka- to locational roots to indicate an absolute extreme position (e.g., pinakataas - "topmost", pinakababa - "bottommost", pinakagitna - "very center", pinakalikod - "very back").
  • Adverbs: It is heavily used with adverbs to describe doing an action to the highest degree (e.g., Siya ang pinakamabilis tumakbo - "He/She runs the fastest"; Siya ang pinakamadalas bumisita - "He/She visits the most often").

6. 'Serving As' Noun Nuance:
While typically used with adjectives, when pinaka- is attached to a noun, it means "acting as" or "serving as" that noun (e.g., pinakaama means "acting as the father" or "serving as the father figure"). Note: While sometimes written with a hyphen (pinaka-ama) for readability, standard orthography does not require it unless the root is a proper noun or foreign loanword.

7. Use with Verbs:
You can also attach pinaka- to certain verbs (especially object-focus or stative verbs) to mean "the most [verb]-ed". For example, pinakaginagamit (most used), pinakapinag-uusapan (most talked about), or pinakakailangan (most needed).

Examples (5)

  1. Siya ang pinakamatalinong estudyante sa klase.

She is the smartest student in the class.

Word by Word: She [marker] smartest-linker student in class.

Here, 'pinaka-' is attached to 'matalino' (smart) and uses the linker '-ng' to connect to 'estudyante'. The marker 'ang' is used because the superlative is the focused subject.

  2. Pinakamahal ang sapatos na ito.

These shoes are the most expensive.

Word by Word: Most-expensive [marker] shoes linker this.

In this predicate-first sentence, the superlative 'pinakamahal' acts as the predicate, so it does not take the 'ang' marker.

  3. Ito ang mga pinakamagagandang bulaklak sa hardin.

These are the most beautiful flowers in the garden.

Word by Word: This [marker] [plural] most-beautiful(plural) flowers in garden.

To pluralize a superlative adjective, you can use reduplication on the first syllable of the root (magaganda) alongside the plural marker 'mga'. Note that for inanimate objects like flowers, demonstrative pronouns like 'ito' (this/these) are used instead of 'sila' (they).

  4. Ito ang bahay na pinakamalaki sa amin.

This is the house that is the biggest in our area.

Word by Word: This [marker] house linker biggest in us.

This shows the Noun + Adjective order. The linker 'na' follows the noun 'bahay' to connect it to the superlative description.

  5. Binili niya ang pinakabagong kotse.

    He bought the newest car.

Word by Word: Bought by-him [marker] newest-linker car.

For adjectives without the 'ma-' prefix like 'bago' (new), 'pinaka-' is attached directly to the root word to form 'pinakabago'.

Common Mistakes

  • Attaching 'pinaka-' only to the root of 'ma-' adjectives.

    Siya ang pinakabilis sa lahat.
    Siya ang pinakamabilis sa lahat.

Standard Filipino requires 'pinaka-' to be attached to the full adjective form (mabilis), not just the root (bilis).

  • Using 'ang' before the superlative when it is the predicate.

    Ang pinakamalaki ang bahay niya.
    Pinakamalaki ang bahay niya.

In a standard predicate-first sentence, the superlative adjective does not need 'ang'. 'Ang' is only used when the superlative is the subject or part of a specific noun phrase.

  • Omitting the linker between the superlative and the noun.

    Ito ang pinakamalaki bahay.
    Ito ang pinakamalaking bahay.

Just like regular adjectives, superlative adjectives need the linker to connect to the noun they modify.
