ipagpa-
Causative-Benefactive with Ipagpa-
The ipagpa- prefix is a 'causative-benefactive' affix. It means you are asking/causing Person A to do something for Person B. The person benefiting (the beneficiary) is the subject of the sentence (the ang phrase).
How It Works
The ipagpa- affix is a combination of the benefactive ipag- and the causative pa-.
1. Focus and Subject:
This is a Benefactive Focus affix. This means the grammatical subject (marked by ang or si) is the person for whom the action is being performed.
2. Ipagpa- vs. Ipa-:
It is important to distinguish this from ipa-. While ipa- is used when the object (the thing being done) is the subject, ipagpa- is used when the beneficiary (the person for whom it is done) is the subject. Furthermore, ipagpa- is the primary causative-benefactive counterpart for mag- verbs, whereas -um- verbs typically use ipa- for this purpose.
3. Marking the Participants:
In an ipagpa- sentence, the roles are marked as follows:
- Subject (Beneficiary): Marked by ang/si.
- Agent (The person made to do the work): Typically marked by the sa marker.
- Object: Marked by the ng marker.
4. Conjugation Patterns:
- Infinitive/Imperative: ipagpa- + root (e.g., ipagpaluto)
- Completed (Perfective): ipinagpa- + root (e.g., ipinagpaluto)
- Incompleted (Imperfective): ipinagpapa- + root (e.g., ipinagpapaluto)
- Contemplated (Future): ipagpapa- + root (e.g., ipagpapaluto)
Note that in the progressive and contemplated aspects, the pa syllable is the one reduplicated.
Examples (4)
- Ipagpagawa mo siya ng bagong sapatos.
Have some new shoes made for him/her.
Word by Word: Cause-to-make-for you him/her of new shoes.
Here, 'siya' (he/she) is the beneficiary in focus. The speaker is telling the listener to find a shoemaker to make shoes for 'siya'.
- Ipinagpalinis ko ang aking ina ng kaniyang kuwarto.
I had someone clean my mother's room for her.
Word by Word: Caused-to-clean-for I the my mother of her room.
The mother (ang aking ina) is the beneficiary. The speaker (ko) initiated the action, but someone else did the actual cleaning.
- Ipagpatawad mo ang aming mga sala.
Forgive us our sins.
Word by Word: Cause-to-pardon-for you the our (plural) sin.
This is a formal, lexicalized use of the affix often found in religious contexts, asking for the 'granting' of forgiveness for the benefit of the speakers.
- Ipagpapaluto kita ng hapunan sa chef.
I will have the chef cook dinner for you.
Word by Word: Will-cause-to-cook-for I-you of dinner to-the chef.
The speaker is the initiator, the chef is the agent, and 'kita' (you) is the beneficiary in focus.
Common Mistakes
Focusing on the object instead of the beneficiary.
Ipagpagawa mo ang mesa para sa kaniya.Ipagpagawa mo siya ng mesa. With ipagpa-, the beneficiary (the person) must be the 'ang' subject. If you want the object (the table) to be the subject, you should use 'ipagawa' instead.
Reduplicating the root instead of the 'pa' prefix in future aspect.
Ipagpagagawa ko siya ng damit.Ipagpapagawa ko siya ng damit. In standard Filipino, the causative 'pa' is the syllable that is reduplicated for the incompleted and contemplated aspects when using this complex affix.
How It Connects

The ipagpa- causative-benefactive pattern is a complex verbal affix that combines three distinct grammatical functions: the theme/benefactive focus (i-), the transitive/distributive prefix (pag-), and the causative prefix (pa-). To understand this pattern, a learner must first be familiar with how benefactive focus works (ipag-) and how causative meaning is layered onto verbs (magpa- and ipagawa).
- ipag-Beneficiary Focus with Ipag-
The ipagpa- prefix is a compound that incorporates the benefactive focus prefix ipag-, which is necessary to understand how the beneficiary becomes the focus of the sentence.
