subalit

But / However

Level 6

Subalit is a formal alternative to the common word pero (but). It is used to join two independent clauses where the second clause presents a contrast, objection, or reservation to the first.

How It Works

In Filipino grammar, subalit is classified as a pangatnig na paninsay (adversative conjunction).

1. Usage and Placement:
It typically appears in the middle of a sentence to connect two thoughts. A comma is mandatory only when subalit connects two independent clauses (e.g., Nais niyang tumulong, subalit wala siyang pera.). If it is connecting simple words or phrases, such as a compound predicate, the comma is omitted (e.g., Matalino subalit tamad.). In formal oratory, it may also start a sentence for emphasis.

2. Register and Tone:
Using subalit in a casual text message or a chat with friends will sound unnaturally stiff or 'poetic' (malalim). It is reserved for academic essays, formal letters, literature, and public speaking.

3. Comparison and Variety:
Learners should note that subalit is largely interchangeable with ngunit. Both are formal alternatives to the conversational pero. To build fluency in formal writing, authors often alternate between subalit and ngunit to avoid repetitive phrasing and improve the stylistic flow of the text.

4. Orthography:
Older texts often use the spelling subali't (with an apostrophe). However, modern standard Filipino orthography, as set by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, prefers the simplified subalit without the apostrophe.

Examples (5)

  1. Nais niyang makatulong sa kapwa, subalit kapos din siya sa pananalapi.

He wants to help others, however, he is also short on funds.

Word by Word: Want he to-help to fellow, but short also he in finances.

This demonstrates a classic formal contrast where a noble intention is met with a practical limitation. A comma is used here because it connects two independent clauses.

  2. Matalino subalit tamad ang mag-aaral na iyon.

That student is intelligent but lazy.

Word by Word: Intelligent but lazy the student that.

In this example, no comma is used because subalit is connecting two adjectives within a single predicate rather than two independent clauses.

  3. Maganda ang layunin ng proyekto, subalit kailangan pa itong suriing mabuti.

The project's goal is good, but it still needs to be examined carefully.

Word by Word: Good the goal of project, but need still this examine-well.

Commonly used in academic or professional critiques to provide a balanced evaluation.

  4. Subalit hindi rito nagtatapos ang ating laban.

But our fight does not end here.

Word by Word: But not here ends the our fight.

In formal oratory or persuasive writing, subalit can be used at the beginning of a sentence to provide a dramatic or emphatic transition.

  5. Sumang-ayon ang nakararami, subalit may ilang tumutol sa mungkahi.

The majority agreed, however, there were some who opposed the proposal.

Word by Word: Agreed the majority, but there-is some opposed to-the suggestion.

Used in formal reporting to acknowledge dissenting opinions within a group.

Common Mistakes

  • 'Subalit' is correct but formal.

Different MeaningGusto ko ng kape subalit wala akong pera.
Gusto ko ng kape pero wala akong pera.

This sentence is fine. 'Subalit' is a written, formal 'but'. In everyday talk, use pero.

  • Redundant use of 'subalit' and 'pero' together.

    Subalit pero hindi siya dumating.
    Subalit hindi siya dumating.

Both words serve the same function. Using them together is grammatically redundant.
