Roots Have a Natural Type

Level 4

The root decides what its endings mean.

How It Works

RootNatural typePlain wordAnother ending
dorm-actiondormi (to sleep)dormo (sleep)
bros-thing (a tool)broso (brush)brosi (to use a brush)
bel-qualitybela (beautiful)belo (beauty)
akv-thingakvo (water)akvi (to water)

A related word keeps the idea of the root. Akvi does what you normally do with water, and brosi does what you normally do with a brush.

Kombi (to comb) and brosi (to brush) are two similar actions, yet their nouns differ. Broso is the tool, because bros- is a tool root. Komb- is an action root, so its noun is the act of combing. The tool for combing needs the affix -il-: kombilo.

  2. Carlos brosas la ĉapelon per nova broso.

Carlos brushes the hat with a new brush.

Broso is the tool, and brosi is the action done with it.

  3. Lucia akvas la florojn en la ĝardeno.

Lucia waters the flowers in the garden.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the plain noun of an action root for the tool.

    Fatima aĉetis novan kombon.
    Fatima aĉetis novan kombilon.

Komb- is an action root, so its plain noun is the act of combing. For the tool, add -il-: kombilo.
