fojo

Once, Twice, Three Times

Level 3

Count times with a number plus fojo, and give it -n.

How It Works

EsperantoMeaning
unu fojononce
du fojojntwice
la unuan fojonthe first time
ĉiufojeevery time
kelkfojesometimes

The question is Kiom da fojoj? (how many times?). The adjective unua agrees with fojo, so it gets -n too: la unuan fojon.

Words with -e come from fojo too: unufoje (once), multfoje (many times), kelkfoje and ĉiufoje.

When fojo is the subject or a description after estas, it takes no -n: Tio estas la unua fojo, ke ... (this is the first time that ...).

Examples (5)

  1. Mei vizitis la kongreson du fojojn.

Mei went to the congress twice.

    Du fojojn answers how often.

  2. La unuan fojon mi parolis Esperanton en la klubo.

The first time, I spoke Esperanto at the club.

Unua agrees with fojo, so both have -n.

  3. Morgaŭ Greta vidos la maron la unuan fojon.

Tomorrow Greta will see the sea for the first time.

La unuan fojon shows the number of the time.

  4. Tio estas la unua fojo, ke Olga skribas leteron en Esperanto.

This is the first time that Olga writes a letter in Esperanto.

After estas the phrase is a description, so it has no -n.

  5. Ni kantas ĉiufoje, kiam Raj venas.

We sing every time Raj comes.

Ĉiufoje is one word that means each time.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out -n on the number of times.

Ni parolis kun Ana du fojoj.
Ni parolis kun Ana du fojojn.

Counting times with a number takes -n: du fojojn.

  • Leaving out -n on the adjective.

Mi vidis ŝin la unua fojon.
Mi vidis ŝin la unuan fojon.

Unua describes fojon, so it takes -n as well.
