Words Ending in ـانه

After a silent ه the ending becomes ـگانه: بچه becomes بچگانه.

How It Works

A ـانه word is an adjective and an adverb at once, with one form: رفتار دوستانه is friendly behavior, and دوستانه گپ زدیم is we talked in a friendly way. The ending sounds like -āna.

Time words give the ending its most common use: روزانه, ماهانه and سالانه say that something repeats every day, month or year. The word شبانه means at night, and شبانه‌روزی means open day and night.

For a place, use ـی: غذای کابلی (Kabuli food). ـانه does not go on a place name (see Adjectives From Places and Nouns).

Where to meet them: shop signs say لباس زنانه, pay slips say معاش ماهانه, and a story can show a character who answers مؤدبانه (politely). The word does not change for a plural noun: لباس‌های زنانه (women’s clothes).

    They always invite us to their home in a friendly way.

    دوستانه describes how they invite us.

  2. رفتار عاقلانهٔ او مشکل را حل کرد.

    Her wise behavior solved the problem.

    عاقلانه describes an action, and the ezafe ـهٔ links it to او.

  3. شفاخانه روزانه از ساعت هشت بجه صبح تا شب باز است.

    The hospital is open every day from eight in the morning until night.

    روزانه means every day.

  4. او معاش ماهانه‌اش را به مادرش می‌دهد.

    He gives his monthly salary to his mother.

    ماهانه means every month, and the ending ـش follows it.

  5. در این دکان لباس زنانه، مردانه و کودکانه می‌فروشند.

    This shop sells women's, men's and children's clothes.

    These three words mean for women, for men and for children.

Common Mistakes

  • Using ـانه where a place needs ـی.

    غذای کابلانه را دوست دارم.
    غذای کابلی را دوست دارم.

    An adjective from a place takes ـی: کابلی.

  • Adding ـانه to a silent ه without changing it.

    رفتار بچه‌انه نکن.
    رفتار بچگانه نکن.

    After a silent ه the ending is ـگانه, so بچه becomes بچگانه.
