How It Works

می‌باشد means the same as است or هست, but it belongs to notices, letters, forms and announcements: دفتر ما از ساعت هشت تا چهار بجه باز می‌باشد. (Our office is open from eight until four.)

Use it with adjectives, nouns and place words: باز می‌باشد (is open), معلم می‌باشد (is a teacher), در کابل می‌باشد (is in Kabul).

Look for it on a sign at a pharmacy door, at the end of a letter, at the top of a form and in a school announcement. Compare the plain sentence دفتر ما باز است with the formal sentence دفتر ما باز می‌باشد. Both mean "our office is open", and the second one sounds official.

می‌باشد is a present form. For the past, say بود or بوده است. For "there is", say هست or وجود دارد.

Write می‌باشد with a half-space between می and باشد.

In a short text, pick one style for "is". If a notice says می‌باشد once, it keeps می‌باشد for its other sentences.

    می‌باشیم matches ما in a formal letter.

  5. شاگردان این صنف همه از ولایت بامیان می‌باشند.

    The students in this class are all from Bamiyan province.

    می‌باشند matches the plural شاگردان.

Common Mistakes

  • Using می‌باشد for the past.

    دیروز او مریض می‌باشد.
    دیروز او مریض بود.

    می‌باشد is a present form. For the past, use بود.

  • Writing می and باشد with a full space.

    او معلم می باشد.
    او معلم می‌باشد.

    می and باشد join with a half-space, and not with a full space.
