How It Works

PersonDialogueWith هستمShort ending
Iخسته استمخسته هستمخسته‌ام
you (a friend)خسته استیخسته هستیخسته‌ای
he or sheخسته استخسته استخسته است
weخسته استیمخسته هستیمخسته‌ایم
you (polite or plural)خسته استیدخسته هستیدخسته‌اید
theyخسته استندخسته هستندخسته‌اند

After a word that ends in a consonant, the short ending joins it directly: مریضم, شاگردیم. After a silent ه, add a half-space: خسته‌ام. The word for he or she is the plain است.

The short ending goes on the word before it: a noun (شاگردیم), an adjective (خسته‌ام) or a place (در خانه‌ایم). The negative is the same in every set: نیستم.

Examples (5)

  1. من خسته‌ام.

    I am tired.

The short ending ـام means am.

  2. تو خسته‌ای؟

    Are you tired?

The short ending ـای is for a friend.

  3. ما خوشحالیم.

    We are happy.

The short ending ـیم means we are.

  4. شما از کجا هستید؟

    Where are you from?

هستید is the written form for شما.

  5. آن‌ها در پارک هستند.

    They are in the park.

هستند is the written form for آن‌ها.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding a second form of be.

    من خسته‌ام استم.
    من خسته‌ام.

خسته‌ام already means I am tired. In dialogue, say من خسته استم.

  • Writing the short ending as a separate word.

    من خسته ام.
    من خسته‌ام.

After a silent ه, the ending joins the word with a half-space, never a full space: خسته‌ام.
