Learning and Teaching
The skill comes before the verb, as an ordinary object.
How It Works

| یاد دادن | to teach | پدرم به من شطرنج یاد داد. |
The word یاد stays the same, and only the second verb changes. Say the subject first and the verb last. The skill and the teacher or learner, with از or به, go in between, in either order: من دری را از مادرکلانم یاد گرفتم, پدرم به من شطرنج یاد داد.
Both verbs change like any other verb: یاد می‌گیرم (I learn), یاد می‌دهم (I teach), یاد بگیرم (that I learn). To study at school, say درس خواندن. To teach lessons as a teacher, say درس دادن.
Ask who taught you with کی: دری را از کی یاد گرفتی؟ (Who did you learn Dari from?)

I learned Dari from my grandmother.
یاد گرفتم: I took the skill. از names the teacher.
- پدرم به من شطرنج یاد داد.
My father taught me chess.
یاد داد: he gave the skill. به names the learner.
- معلم صاحب به ما انگلیسی یاد می‌دهد.
Our teacher teaches us English.
یاد می‌دهد is the present of یاد دادن.
- می‌خواهم شنا یاد بگیرم.
I want to learn to swim.
After می‌خواهم comes the subjunctive: یاد بگیرم.
- نسرین از خواهرش خیاطی یاد گرفت.
Nasrin learned sewing from her sister.
از خواهرش is the person she learned it from.
Common Mistakes
Mixing up the two verbs.
او به من آشپزی یاد گرفت.او به من آشپزی یاد داد.یاد گرفتن is to learn and یاد دادن is to teach. She gave the skill, so use یاد داد.
Using به for the teacher after یاد گرفتن.
من به مادرم آشپزی یاد گرفتم.من از مادرم آشپزی یاد گرفتم.The person you learn from takes از.
