Going Towards with طرف

Use طرف راست and طرف چپ for right and left.

How It Works

طرف followed by a place means towards that place. The two words are joined by the unwritten link -i, as in taraf-i Paghman, so you write only طرف پغمان. به طرف says the same thing: به طرف پغمان.

طرف also fits looking and running: طرف دروازه دویدند (they ran towards the gate), طرف من نگاه کرد (she looked towards me). To go and see a person, use پیش.

Directions combine it with commands: طرف راست بروید (go to the right), طرف چپ بپیچید (turn left).

  1. موتر طرف پغمان روان شد.

    The car set off towards Paghman.

    طرف stands before the place پغمان.

  2. به طرف بازار رفتیم.

    We went towards the bazaar.

    به طرف says the same as طرف.

  3. در چهارراهی طرف چپ بپیچید.

    Turn left at the intersection.

    طرف چپ is the left side, and بپیچید is a polite command.

  4. بچه‌ها طرف دروازه دویدند.

    The children ran towards the gate.

    طرف stands before دروازه.

  5. شبنم طرف من نگاه کرد و لبخند زد.

    Shabnam looked towards me and smiled.

    طرف من means towards me.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting به after طرف.

    طرف به بازار رفتیم.
    طرف بازار رفتیم.

    The place follows طرف directly. If you use به, put it before طرف: به طرف بازار.
