Everyday Kabul Speech: He or She Goes

Level 3

The negative adds نـ in front: نمیره is said for نمی‌رود.

How It Works

In writing, the present tense for he and she ends in ـد. Kabul speech says these two verbs with a short -a at the end, and friends write it ـه.

Everyday speechWritten DariMeaning
میره (mēra)می‌رودgoes
میکنه (mēkuna)می‌کندdoes
نمیره (namēra)نمی‌رودdoes not go
نمیکنه (namēkuna)نمی‌کندdoes not do

The speech form is for one person, he or she. The words around the verb stay as they are in writing.

Speech spelling joins می to the verb with no gap, as in میره. Writing always puts a half-space after می: می‌رود.

Iranian chats spell the same words میره and میکنه, so you will see them in Iranian texts too. In Dari writing, use می‌رود and می‌کند.
