Adjectives Stay the Same

Level 2

Dari adjectives have no plural and no gender, so there is one form to learn.

How It Works

An everyday adjective does not change. It has no plural and no gender. The same word describes one noun or many, a man or a woman. A few Arabic titles in formal writing, such as محترمه (Madam), keep an Arabic feminine form, but you do not build those.

OneMany
کتاب نوکتاب‌های نو
بچهٔ خوببچه‌های خوب
گل مقبولگل‌های مقبول

Only the noun takes ـها. In کتاب‌های نو, the ها is on کتاب, and نو stays نو. The adjective comes after the noun, joined by the ezafe.

After a number the noun stays singular, and the adjective stays the same: دو کتاب نو (two new books).

The same holds when the adjective comes before a form of be: کتاب‌ها نو استند, او خسته است, ما خسته استیم. The verb changes for the person, and خسته stays خسته.

Dari has no grammatical gender, so one adjective fits every person: او مهربان است describes a man or a woman.

Examples (5)

  1. یک کتاب نو اینجا است.

    A new book is here.

    نو follows کتاب.

  2. کتاب‌های نو روی میز استند.

The new books are on the table.

کتاب takes ها, and نو stays the same.

  3. بچه‌های خوب در مکتب استند.

The good children are at school.

    خوب has no plural form.

  4. این گل‌ها بسیار مقبول استند.

    These flowers are very pretty.

The verb is plural, and مقبول stays the same.

  5. او خسته است، ما هم خسته استیم.

He is tired, and we are tired too.

خسته is the same for او and ما.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding ها to the adjective.

    کتاب‌های نوها
    کتاب‌های نو

Only the noun is plural. The adjective stays نو.
