Verbs With Two Aspect Readings

Level 5

A biaspectual verb can be interpreted as imperfective or perfective depending on its context. Its spelling alone does not select one reading.

How It Works

Upravo ručam presents an activity in progress. Kad ručam, krenut ću can present lunch as an event to be completed before departure. The same verb appears in both contexts.

Biaspectuality is a property of particular lexical entries, not of every borrowed verb or every verb with a particular ending. A related prefixed form may also exist and may make a bounded reading more explicit.

When reading, identify the timeline and the event’s role first. When speaking, add enough context to make the intended reading clear, especially when a bare present could otherwise suggest a current activity.
