Two and Both

Level 2

Dva means two and oba means both. Their feminine counting forms are dvije and obje.

How It Works

For a masculine noun, compare dva prijatelja and oba prijatelja. For a feminine noun, compare dvije prijateljice and obje prijateljice. The second expression in each pair refers to both members.

Neuter nouns also use dva and oba: dva sela and oba sela. Their gender is not inferred from the final written -a of the counted noun.

These are the basic counting forms. In formal inflected phrases, numerals can have other case forms, such as dvama or dvjema. Collective expressions such as dvoje djece follow another pattern and should be learned separately.
